Yeah, it's been four months and the little guy is still a little wrinkly . . . . . . .
But seriously, the water was like 75F. It was glorious.

I was in Duluth in AUGUST and the water was forty-six. Holy crap, I didn't think that lake ever got that warm.

You need to choose your beach carefully. There are some shallow shelves along the south shore (say that five times quickly) where the water can warm to a pleasant temp by late summer. If you've got a thing for the lake (as I do), you MUST get to Pictured Rocks Nat'l lakeshore. Positively otherworldly static3.realadventures.com/listingimages/1213/1213278/m_1213278a.jpg[/img]

Ooo, purdy!
I confess it, I'm a Gitcheegoom-ophile. The idea of a lake that damn big and deep and beautiful being in a global geographical sense right in my back yard blows my mind. It is the only body of water I was ever able to overcome my fear of boats enough to ride out onto.

I've been goofy for the lake since I was in junior high. It's as close as I come to any sort of spirituality. I feel some sort of almost sentient presence.
I've been knee deep or more in Superior at least two hundred times and fully immersed a couple dozen. I've been in it in every month except February. Mary's gotten used to the fact that we have to stop at waysides and bridges, and I have to take of my shoes and dabble.
I've been in all the other great lakes, but they don't effect me the same way.

I haven't had the opportunity to see the other Greats, but even just from the experience of pictures I can't imagine them being half as ... sentient is a good word for it ... as Superior. You go there and it does feel as though you are in the presence of something ancient and aware, and pretty much indifferent to your existence but willing to show off for you.
I stuck my tootsies in but I'm a non-swimmer so I don't go out in shallow waters over knee-depth. Just knowing how deep that lake is in places is enough to keep me at the shoreline where I can see just where the bottom is.

Psychic. </Shawn Spencer "I have a clue" face mode> (Pic added because I know there's no way in hell you know what I'm talking about. Shawn Spencer is the guy using the black guy's head as a magic eight ball. A hilariously cute detective dramedy.)

You're write right, never heard of it.
But I'll check it out, now.
Did I ever rave at you (and everybody else) about the spectacular wonderfulness of "Wonderfalls" - an aborted comedy from themid 2000's. They only aired two episodes (on FOX - which cancelled it because it was too good), but you can get fourteen episodes on dvd either from netflix or amazon. I think it's the funniest/best thing thats been on television for the last 30 years. (but then, I haven't seen 99% of what s' been on tv for the last 30 years).

It's called PSYCH, it's from the USA network (an NBC affiliate) and it's utterly ridiculous but highly endearing. And the skeptical straight-laced cop character is played by an actor who could very easily be the American Jason Isaacs (in other words, I think he's hot).
I think I've heard of Wonderfalls, but I'm sure I've never seen it. I'll try and find it, but I don't do Netflix.

>snorkle< That's always good, when they screw the order up.
I can't buy it right now. To say that money has been "tight" would be like unto saying that Sarah Palin is "fairly conservative and slightly frightening."

You watch that smart mouth, Missy . We'd be happy to lend it to you. As Mary pointed out yesterday, we don't need to watch it any more, we can just stand in the kitchen and recite it. Shoot me E-mail me a mailing address if you're interested. I'm sure you'd enjoy it, it's "utterly ridiculous but highly endearing" . Be warned when we gave it to our nephew a couple years ago, he started watching at 9:00 one evening and couldn't stop 'til he was finished 11 hours later.

People are posting here again--yay!
Next weekend, my mom's retirement community (she's in assisted living) is having their first "Olympics," complete with competitions and food and a speaker. The woman who runs the Health Center where Mom exercises has been trying to convince her to attend and have us come, too. Well, yesterday Abigail read the agenda and found out that the guest speaker was one of her favorite authors, Dave Barry. I think Mom will be forced to attend now!
