I just got a call from Kay, who asked me to let you all know that Lyra passed away this morning at 8:15. She'd been sleeping more and more lately. Last night she had had a bad seizure and then fell asleep; after a while she gave a kind of gasp and then just passed away... it sounds as if it were peaceful, at least, if it can be called peaceful. Kay is having a rough time, of course. Her friend Pam is visiting from Stillwater right now; she says tonight when she is alone will be the hardest time. Lyra was unable to visit yesterday because of the tornado-y weather (the tornadoes didn't hit them, but there were bad storms), so it was Monday when Kay saw her last, and she was really looking forward to having her snuggle up with her in bed today. I asked if there were going to be services where we could send flowers or anything, or if she'd prefer a donation to something, and she said they don't have the services planned yet (it only just happened after all) but she would prefer that people give a donation to Children's Cancer Society (she is not sure that is what it's called, but thinks so) in lieu of flowers. If anyone is not on this board who should know about this, please let them know. I think that's everything I know, for now. Oh, and this: Jeff and his mom and the minister came to give her the news in person, so at least she wasn't alone. sadly - judi

Oh, I am in tears. Kay, Jeff & family, words are completely inadequate, but I am so sorry for the loss of your precious girl.
Kay, I hope you read this one day and know how much you and your little girl inspired me. Her courage and resilience through a bunch of completely unfair circumstances was amazing to see. Your determination to do the best you possibly could for her in the face of your own pain and illness was absolutely stunning and humbling. My heart goes out to you. I wish I could be where you are and just hold you right now, take some of your pain away. My love and prayers are with you.

Thank you for letting us know, judi. I can't imagine what it's like to lose your baby. I'm praying for comfort for Kay and her family. Lyra was such a delight, even if I never met her. Send Kay my condolences.

i've been playing phone tag with kay (and jeff) and still haven't found out anything specific they would like donations sent to or even how they are doing. kay said she just couldn't answer the phone one day... and sounded a bit better on her message to me, but that was very early in the morning, i guess, because it was there when i got up one day. and i haven't been able to get her back since then. i'll try again but is anyone else having better success?
