Thank you, bjorn, I had nearly succeeded in blocking that from my consciousness. It has now returned full-force.

So, I've never bought a lottery ticket, and all the talk about it lately is starting to drive me crazy. I was just at a meeting yesterday at which one of the high up executives in my organization told us she bought $30 worth of tickets because "you never know."
Yes you do. You just threw away thirty bucks. What part of 80-times-more-likely-to-be-struck-by-lightning don't you understand?

Presumably some of that $30 will go towards lottery charities. I just look at my lottery ticket habit (indulged once in a blue moon) as a donation to charity as much as a waste of my hard-earned discretionary income.
What does my head in is the people who have insufficient money to live on and spend it first on things like lottery tickets and cigarettes. Pay your bills, buy food, THEN if you have money left buy lottery tickets and cigs and good luck to you and enjoy them.

i usually buy $4 worth each week in florida... on average. in NC, i've bought i think $5 total...a few bucks on two occasions when it was all over the news, as it was this week i would not ever, i don't think, spend more than $5 at a time on lottery tickets, and i've stood in line behind people who spend $160 a week, or maybe even twice a week (the clerk told me) and even more. and in my neighborhood, there aren't that many people who have $160 a week to just throw away. i mean, it's definitely a working class neighborhood. i can't fathom why they don't go buy a new tv, or put it away every week and go on vacation to london or something even "just" a hundred bucks a week wasted would give you a really nice vacation, or a down payment on a car. just don't get it.

I've just never enjoyed or understood gambling at all. I had a group of friends in highschool and college who played poker regularly (every other week or so). Even when the most you might when or lose in an evening was five bucks, I didn't enjoy it, and stopped coming after a few sessions because it was boring. Later they started playing much higher stakes - with pots occasionally reaching $300. That ended some friendships.
In 1980 I put a quarter in a slot machine in Reno. It kept it, and that was the last time I ever gambled (money).
I waste my money lots of others ways.

yeah, i agree... i don't really think of the lottery as 'gambling' though i am just buying a chance on a raffle. for actual gambling, we have all the casinos, and i have been only a couple of times... i spend a few bucks and then i'm done. it's okay for an evening of "entertainment' with friends, but it's basically just noisy and boring imho. i generally wander off to watch the dogs, or various music groups, or go sit in the bar, as far as i could get from the clanging things....that said, i DO love to play the poker machines, for some reason. it's kind of a fast-paced solitaire. but that's the only one i can even stand do to for more than 5 minuters
